Statistical correlations in a Coulomb gas with a test charge

چکیده
A recent paper [Jokela et al., arxiv:0806.1491 (2008)] contains a surmise about an expectation value in a Coulomb gas which interacts with an additional charge ξ that sits at a fixed position. Here I demonstrate the validity of the surmised expression and extend it to a certain class of higher cumulants. The calculation is based on the analogy to statistical averages in the circular unitary ensemble of random-matrix theory and exploits properties of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. Purpose and result In a recent paper Jokela, Järvinen and Keski-Vakkuri studied n-point functions in timelike boundary Liouville theory via the analogy to a Coulomb gas on a unit circle [1]. In this analogy, N unit charges at position ti interact with additional charges of integer value ξa, situated at position τa. To illustrate this technique the authors of [1] considered the canonical expectation value 〈·〉 ≡ 1 Z ∫ N ∏

Statistical correlations in a two-component Coulomb gas on a circle
Abstract. The calculation is based on the analogy to statistical averages in the circular u...
متن کامل1 99 9 Coulomb systems at low density
Results on the correlations of low density classical and quantum Coulomb systems at equilibrium in three dimensions are reviewed. The exponential decay of particle correlations in the classical Coulomb system – Debye-Hückel screening – is compared and contrasted with the quantum case where strong arguments are presented for the absence of exponential screening. Results and techniques for detail...

A systematic study of the properties of particle and charge correlation functions in the two-dimensional Coulomb gas confined to a one-dimensional domain is under-taken. Two versions of this system are considered: one in which the positive and negative charges are constrained to alternate in sign along the line, and the other where there is no charge ordering constraint. Both systems undergo a ...
متن کاملInteraction of electric charges in ( 2 + 1 ) D magnetic dipole gas
The interaction of electrically charged particles in a dilute gas of pointlike magnetic dipoles is studied. We show that the interaction potential at small distances has a linear piece due to overlap of the dipole clouds gathered near electric sources. At large distances the potential becomes of the Coulomb type with nonperturbatively renormalized charge of the test particle. The physical appli...
متن کاملKinetics of macroion coagulation induced by multivalent counterions.
Due to the strong correlations between multivalent counterions condensed on a macroion, the net macroion charge changes sign at some critical counterion concentration. This effect is known as the charge inversion. Near this critical concentration the macroion net charge is small. Therefore, short range attractive forces between macroions dominate Coulomb repulsion and lead to their coagulation....
